A Park Created for People and Nature

In the 21st century we are continuing to push the burden on the earth's environment to the limits. In order to continue to sustain development while at the same time maintain a life, which is agreeable, abundant and comfortable for the Japanese people, we are now looking at the global long term view of having to conserve the earth's environment and so we are searching for a way to establish concrete plans of action.
At the Showa Kinen Park, in harmony with the facilities provided and the upkeep and maintenance, not only do we offer a location for high quality outdoor recreational activities amidst greenery, but we are contriving to reduce the burden on the environment by restoring and preserving nature through the efficient use of natural resources and waste matter. In addition to that we also have a more comprehensive understanding of how to conserve the natural environment of an area and this brings global preservation of the environment into our field of vision. In the chart below, we have collated the creative possibilities for conservation and revitalisation of the natural environment within large scale urban parks using this park as the basis for our examples.

DEALING WITH PRESERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT Reducing the Burden on the environment Re-utilising resources Effective use of construction by-products
Re-using scrap wood from plants (recycling center)
Polluted water treatment system (using semi-purified water)
Water recycling within the park Purification system
Conserving topsoil
Making the best use of existing trees (technique of moving trees with broad trunks)
Reducing the Amount of Resources Consumed Energy saving policies for facilities in the park
Using rainwater percolated underground or accumulated rainwater
Forming a Rich Environment Preserving a Variety of Life Forms Preserving the Natural Environment Understanding the environment by carrying out a survey on flora and fauna over a set period.
Putting into effect plans for a properly controlled habitat
Limiting use of agricultural chemicals etc.
Managing grasslands with consideration for the habitat of life forms there
Preserving forests
Preserving the environment around water
Restoring the various natural structures of river walls
Creating an Ecological Environment for the Various Life Forms Growing a variety of trees
Creating a natural environment around water
Creating a diverse grassland environment (i.e. Varying the frequency of cutting grass, cutting period, cut height etc.)
Ensuring passageways for wild life to move through (Forming an ecological network)
Offering a Place where Contact can be made with Nature Offering a Place to Study and learn about the Environment Introducing various systems to explain about nature (e.g. self-help guides, and participation)
Expanding a place of recreation so that nature can be experienced (e.g. facilities from which nature can be observed easily)
Holding events to study the environment
