 How the Park is Used

This urban park is close to the city center, and so about 80% of the people who use it come from within the city. With the introduction of new facilities to the park, the trend is for more visitors coming from greater distances.
Surveys show that the main methods of transport to the park are private cars and rail each accounting for 40% of the total.
Of the total number of visitors who come to use the park, about 45% come with their families and 23% come with friends, but school groups and the like also account for a large number, so people can enjoy themselves time and again in the spaciousness of this special park here in the city.
Because of its spaciousness and the convenience of its location the park is suitable for a variety of events, and it is hoped that it may be used for new types of open air events such as new sporting activities and outdoor barbecues.

Use of the Surrounding Vacant Land

A report was put forward by the Central Council for National Properties of the Ministry of Finance on 19th November 1979 with regard to outline plans for utilization of the vacant land of the former Tachikawa air base (566 hectares approximately). According to those plans, in addition to the construction of the Showa Kinen Park, the following is outline plans for utilization of the land.
  1. A Wide Area Disaster Base
The Tachikawa wide area disaster base is in a strategic location for dealing with emergency operations during a large scale disasters in the southern Kanto area. It can integrate all the disaster prevention services necessary such as airport, medical, and emergency stockpiling facilities. It was completed in FY 1995 and has been used for the training of personnel engaged in fire fighting and for spreading information about disaster prevention.

  2. Business Area
In the south-eastern and south-western section of this vacant land, plans and projects are underway for the building of sites for business facilities such as office buildings for public facilities, and private offices. In Faret Tachikawa, in the south-eastern section, in an area of 5.9 hectares, an urban redevelopment by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation opened in October 1994 and saw the integrated establishment of buildings which housed commercial and service facilities and offices together with many contemporary works of art which breathe the spirit of the expressions of human nature into the city.

  3. Reserved Land
Other areas are being reserved for the time being until their use is decided.
