 Basic Ideology Behind the Showa Kinen Park

The Government of Japan has built a commemorative park in the vicinity of the capital as a series of projects commemorating 50 years reign of the Emperor Showa, for the use of a long line of future generations. This park epitomises the essence of this project, in that it provides both a cultural content and wide public open space encompassing the theme of 'Restoration of Greenery and Enhancement of Human Life' with an abundance of greenery, so that now and in the future it is a place where the people of Japan can have a natural environment in which to refresh their minds and bodies.

 Basic Objectives of the Showa Kinen Park

1. Basic Details
  1. The basis for the construction of the Showa Kinen Park is to create an abundantly green environment within which to reflect in peace and quiet upon the turmoil and upheavals of the Showa period, and to seek out a life worth living in a whole new era. This park is representative of Japan, but has international characteristics also.
  2. The keynote of the entire park is the creation of a new kind of space, both peaceful and rich in greenery.
  3. A place to refresh one's mind through many forms of relaxation amid the changing seasons.
  4. The strongpoint of the park will be important cultural activities, in keeping with the new era, to stimulate all people from all walks of life to the pursuit of a better way of life.
  5. The park can also function as an evacuation area in times of natural disasters.
  6. The park also demonstrates a revival in Japan's traditional landscaping techniques as well as widely used modern technology.

2. Details about the Facilities
  1. To create commemorative facilities which provide a place to reflect upon the last 50 years of Showa, and to inaugurate the unfolding of a new era.
  2. To revitalise the scenery of the Musashino Plain, using an abundance of greenery and deeply wooded areas together with an effective and practical use of water.
  3. In addition to flower gardens to enhance the rich experience of the changing seasons, there is a Japanese Garden and Flower Tree Garden which strongly features Cherry trees, the flower symbolic of Japan.
  4. There will be facilities for activities which can be enjoyed by people of all ages and both sexes.
  5. In wide open spaces there will be facilities for important cultural activities, which will contribute to the increased level of national and international culture.
  6. The scale and composition of open spaces and pathways will be such as to enable them to function as areas of refuge in times of natural disaster.
  7. To exercise the function of the park, the transport facilities will be first and foremost to provide access for its visitors.
