| 'Croquet' | |
![]() |
A
game where you hit a ball with a wooden 'mallet' passing through a number of 'hoops'
and following set rules. You have won when you have hit the top of the last 'peg'. When the ball you hit touches another ball you have an additional hit and so you can progress the game to your advantage. With its roots in the Japanese game of 'gate-ball' you can think of this game as being close to a sort of billiard game on grass, but it is a sport with a history. In the Showa Kinen Park there are 2 courts especially for croquet. |
| 'Disc Golf' | |
![]() |
A
game where you compete by throwing a 'flying disc' (generally known as a Frisbee,
this is the product name) and a set number of throws into a special basket. The
distance from the hole is between 50 ~ 100 metres, the rules and protocol are
similar to golf. In Showa Kinen Park the course is 18 holes, and is laid out in
natural surroundings in a semi-circle from the Woodland Park Area to the north
side of 'Fields for Everyone'. Everyone can enjoy this in a wide open space regardless
of age or sex. There are set times for training sessions. |
| 'Petanque' | |
![]() |
Petanc
is a game where you throw a metal ball at a small wooden target ball called a
'butte' and you have to somehow get your ball nearer than your opponent's to win.
It appears to be quite a simple game but the court is very uneven, and the game
is more involved , in that you have to hit the butte with your own ball and try
to move your opponents ball away (it doesn't matter if you hit your own ball).
In the Showa Kinen Park there are 12 courts set aside for this game in the New
Sports Area. There are set times for training sessions. |
| 'Horse-Shoe-Tossing' | |
![]() |
Horse-Shoe-Tossing
is a game in which you throw a horse shoe at a 'stake'. It resembles quoits where
you compete for points by whether you can get the horse shoe over the stake or
to within 15cm of it. The distance from the platform (the position for the throw)
is 12 metres for men and 9 metres for women, and the target area is damp soil
and sand to prevent the horse shoe from bouncing off or rolling away. In Showa
Kinen Park's New Sports Area there are 4 courts especially for this game. There are set times for training sessions. |
| 'Lawn Bowling' | |
![]() |
Lawn Bowling is a game where you compete by rolling an eccentric ball (a spheroid the center of which is biased) towards a target called a 'jack'and somehow getting your ball closer than your opponent's. The court is turf and is a level square being 35m each side, the game is carried out in a 5m rink divided into 7 equal lengths. Around the outside a channel about 30cm wide is dug out, the outside levee is a height of about 30cm to enable a ball hit too hard to rebound. In Showa Kinen Park there is one court with 7 rinks. |
